Henry Hudson sailed up the Hudson River in 1609, claiming the valley for the Dutch Crown. Although the Dutch relinquished their claims in 1683, many of their place names remain. The Dutch word for creek, "kill" appears often (Fishkill). Dutchess Revolutionary War sites include Van Wyck Homestead and Mount Gulian, (William), Verplanck family patriarch. Two prominent families boast Dutch heritage - Roosevelts, originally van Rosenvelt (field of roses) and Vanderbilts. The Dutch, including the Verplancks, were successful entrepreneurs in New Amsterdam (after 1664, New York), and the first to establish trading posts north of the city to do business with Indians and European traders.

MADAM BRETT HOMESTEAD
50 Van Nydeck Avenue, Beacon. Dutchess County’s oldest homestead. Fulton’s name is directly linked to the house, for his eldest grandson, Rev. Robert Fulton Crary, married one of Madam Brett’s descendents and raised his family there. Open second Saturday each month and by appointment.
