During Henry Hudson’s search for a shorter route from Holland to India, he sailed up what is now the Hudson River. In September 1609, he anchored his ship "Half Moon" at Newburgh Bay. The ship’s chronicler, Robert Juet, noted that, “This is a very pleasant place to build a towne on.” And Dutch settlers did just that, founding towns throughout the county. Today, several cruise boats ply the waters of Newburgh Bay, giving modern visitors scenic views of the Hudson Highlands, some that show little change since Henry Hudson was here.
