Rensselaer County, originally known as Rensselaerswyck the name given by the Dutch Patroon Kilean Van Rensselaer in 1630. Tenant farmers owed an annual rent to the Van Rensselaer family. Farming and trading of goods from the farms and small hamlets on the banks of the Hudson River led to the growth of the the villages of Bath-On-Hudson, Troy and Lansingburgh. Ferries connected these villages with Albany. Early Dutch architecture can be found in Lansingburgh and present day North Greenbush and City of Rensselaer.
